Musical fiction at its best

Rooted in the 1970’s, ‘Assisting Fate’ is the follow up to Say Goodbye and the second book in the Walker-Powell trilogy. This story delves deeper into Lee Walker's world, a character whose life is forever altered by a fateful decision. As the plot unfolds, we witness the aftermath of Lee's bold choice, which sets into motion a series of catastrophic events. At the heart of the narrative is Lee's grandmother, Nancy, a former director of MI6 whose shadowy past comes back to haunt her in unexpected ways. Despite her formidable reputation, Nancy finds herself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse, where the stakes are higher than ever before. As she grapples with the consequences of her actions, Nancy has to confront the ghosts of her past and make unimaginable sacrifices to protect those she loves.

Solid follow-up with more action

After reading the first book about Lee, I was curious to see where the story would go next. This one shifts focus to his grandmother Nancy, and honestly I didn't expect the whole MI6 spy angle. It's pretty different from the first book but in a good way - more action and intrigue instead of the family drama stuff.

The espionage parts were well done, though sometimes I had to go back and reread sections to keep track of all the characters and their connections. Nancy's character is interesting - you can see where Lee gets some of his toughness from. I liked learning more about the family background and how everything ties together from the previous book.

Assisting Fate blends espionage, family drama, and emotional depth to keep you hooked from start to finish. The characters feel authentic, and it has solid themes of loyalty and sacrifice at the centre of the story. The story centers on Nancy, a former M16 director whose past comes back to haunt her. The pacing is fast, with plenty of twists, making it solid, enjoyable read.

This book picks up the story with great momentum and keeps the tension high all the way. I liked how the author mixes thriller elements with emotional depth, making the characters feel real. A few parts were a bit rushed, but overal its a gripping read and a worthy follow up to the first book.

An excellent sequel to the first volume

I really enjoyed reading this book, a mix of mystery, thriller, and family drama. The writing style is truly engaging and flowing. It's a rather long story but a very quick read. An excellent sequel to the first volume. Truly excellent work. I received a free copy of the book and am deliberately reviewing it.
